Commercial & E-commerce Lead

Yuhai Lin

Ten years of cross-border operations between the Nordics and Asia. Commercial growth, D2C, and shipping software with AI, no developer on the team. Based in Espoo, Finland.

Yuhai Lin

Most of my career has been spent on the operator side of cross-border commerce, not the consulting side. From 2015 I ran Lunette's China D2C business through Finnexion Oy, building up a Taobao store, opening Tmall in 2017, and eventually closing it in 2022 after the numbers stopped making sense post-COVID. That decision was data-driven, not reactive. At peak, the Shanghai operation was doing around 10 million RMB a year across all brands, with a ten-person team on the ground.

I've also helped Flow Cosmetics and Lumene build their China market presence, handling everything from product selection through KOL livestreaming and Tmall operations. Before all of that, I ran e-commerce for LUMI Accessories, a Finnish brand with its primary markets in Finland, the Nordics, and Europe, managing channels across Europe, the US, China, and Japan. Earlier still, I negotiated publishing deals with Rovio, Tencent, and Huawei at a mobile games company. Across these roles, a consistent part of the work has been designing the customer journey from scratch, mapping each touchpoint and building CRM and lifecycle systems around what we found.

A common thread through these roles has been starting without a playbook. The brands I've worked with were my own choices. I spotted them, reached out directly, and negotiated the commercial terms before building anything. That pattern has extended into software. I've built and shipped several consumer apps to the App Store using AI as the primary tool, no developer on the team. I'm most useful in environments where building the structure is part of the job.

I'm completing a Master's degree in Sustainable Digital Life at Tampere University. My research focuses on a question that sits at the intersection of product and growth: what makes users keep using a digital service over time?

The thesis looks specifically at the role gamification and user experience play in building sustained engagement. Not retention as a metric, but the user experience behind it. What keeps people engaged, what becomes less effective over time, and what digital product teams can learn from these patterns.

It connects directly to my broader work in customer lifecycle marketing, CRM, and commercial growth, and to ten years of watching what actually makes customers come back.

Finnexion Oy · 2015 – present

Lunette · China D2C Operations

Ran the full P&L of Lunette's China business as operator. Built and managed a ten-person Shanghai team covering design, marketing, logistics, CRM, and product management. Operated Taobao for close to ten years and Tmall for five, then closed Tmall on the basis of post-COVID data to protect margins rather than chase revenue. The CRM results came from designing the customer journey end to end, mapping each stage from first purchase through repurchase, and building lifecycle automations around what we found.

Onnea Finnish Maternity Box · 2016 – 2019

Built and exited a Finnish maternity box brand in China

Launched and operated Onnea, a Finnish maternity box brand, in the China market. The brand was endorsed by the Finnish Embassy in Shanghai, a mark of trust that helped open doors with Chinese consumers and retail partners. Exited in 2019.

Finnexion Oy · China market

Flow Cosmetics & Lumene

Helped Flow Cosmetics and Lumene build their China market presence. Handled product selection for Chinese consumer preferences, ran KOL livestreaming campaigns, and managed Tmall operations end to end.

UGameHome · 2011 – 2013

International game publishing BD

Worked the commercial layer between Finnish game developers and the Chinese market, and in the other direction too. For Finnish studios, this meant explaining China's domestic publishing requirements, distribution channels, and platform rules to teams with no existing framework for the market. For Chinese games, it meant finding and negotiating with overseas publishers. Negotiated publishing licences and agency agreements with Rovio, Tencent, and Huawei.

LUMI Accessories · 2013 – 2015

Global e-commerce for a Finnish accessories brand

Managed online sales for LUMI Accessories, a Finnish brand with its primary markets in Finland, the Nordics, and Europe, and managing channels in Europe, the US, China, and Japan. Ran Shopify and WooCommerce operations. Grew sales by 20% during the role.

Nordic2010 · 2010 – present

Nordic lifestyle community for Taiwanese audiences

Built and managed a Facebook community covering Nordic travel, design, and living for Taiwanese readers. Grew to over 21,000 followers, with 91% of the audience based in Taiwan and the core demographic in the 35 to 54 age range. Ran paid Facebook campaigns throughout, which is where I developed hands-on fluency with Meta Ads Manager and Facebook's targeting and performance mechanics. Also used Google Analytics to track traffic and conversions for a connected proxy shopping service operated through LINE and WeChat.

Aalto Start-Up Center · ongoing

Entrepreneur mentor, China market strategy

Been advising startups at Aalto Start-Up Center on China market strategy for over ten years. Most conversations are with founders who are seriously thinking about Asia but don't yet have a working model for the market. The questions are usually about channels, platform dynamics, pricing for Chinese consumers, and what a first commercial relationship should look like.

I use Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Codex every day as actual workflow tools, not experiments. ParkScan, Pad Frame, and MingClarity all went from idea to App Store without a developer on the team. I'm comfortable scoping a project, building the first version myself, and knowing when to bring others in.

The question I find most interesting about AI isn't which tool to use. It's whether the existing way of working still makes sense. Most of what AI handles well, things like research, production, and repetition, used to occupy most of a marketer's time. What's left is judgment: what's worth building, what's worth saying, what a data point actually means in a real market.

On the marketing and commerce side: HubSpot, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics Customer Insights, Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, GA4.
